The perfect getaway for your sun-tanning sessions, cool dips and relaxing with the soft ocean breeze, Ganghwa Island is a place you need to include in your list of summer destinations. Located in the west sea, with 28 spectacular islands and a shore that stretches for 99km long, Ganghwa island, is a must see island filled with so many wonders and of course, treasures to history. Since the island is ever since a home to ancient civilization, there are many prehistoric artifacts that can be found here. The most famous of these are the Goindol Rocks, designated as World’s Cultural Treasure. There are about 80 of these stone graves around the island. There is also evidence of Dangunwanggeom, the founding figure of Korea whose life marks the beginning of Korean history.
Also loved for its wide variety of local products, including the Ganghwa Ginseng, Pure-Ganghwa radish and Hwamunseok, which is a mat woven with flower patterns, Ganghwa is a haven of various herbs, and medicinal products. The nearby Bomunsa Buddhist temple is also a must see place and which houses a display of 500 statues. There is also a huge statue of Buddha lying down in one of the temple buildings which is also unique.
You can also visit the Ganghwa Historical Museum to learn more of Ganghwa’s beautiful history and to watch the exhibits of the island’s relics and artifacts.
