Traditionally, Winter in Korea, and around the word in general, was a harsh and rough time. In modern times, Winter is a festive time of year that many people around the world look forward to.
It’s a time to share with friends, family, and also hear Mariah Carey’s “All I want For Christmas” (unfortunately) everywhere you go. Seriously, please stop. We need to come up with a new song to play.
Anyways, here are the top 5 destinations to join during Winter in Korea. These are not ranked in any particular order. Without further ado, here are the top 5:
Nami Island
Nami Island is one of the most popular destinations in Korea, regardless of the season. Many Korean drama fans will know it as a shooting location for the drama “Winter Sonata” and has become a mecca of sorts for Winter Sonata fans.
Nami Island is also known for it’s beautiful scenery. In particular, it is pretty popular during Autumn for the foliage. Winter time is a close second for best time to visit Nami Island. If you’re in Korea in Winter, be sure to check out Nami Island. Another bonus is that it is less crowded than Autumn.

Garden of Morning Calm Winter Light Display
Gardens aren’t something that comes to mind when thinking about places to visit during Winter in Korea. Rightfully so, considering that plants and trees are dead during Winter. Garden of Morning has a light display during Winter. They decorate the garden with over 30,000 lights. The lights are dazzling and definitely Instagram worthy.

Ski Resorts
Korea is a mountainous country and perfect for ski resorts. There are ski resorts all over the country, but the resorts in Gangwondo Province are the best. Gangwondo Province gets the most snow and has ideal conditions for skiing and snowboarding.
Alpensia Resort in Gangwondo hosted the 2018 Winter Olympics and is recommended.

Taebaek Mountain Snow Festival
Deep in the heart of Gangwondo, Mt. Taebaek is the site for the annual Taebaek Mountain Snow Festival. You can check out igloos and ice sculptures, as well as take part in activities such as sledding, hiking, and more.
