Haenyeo – Women Divers of Jeju Island – South Korea
Be sure to include women divers in your 2023 itinerary of Jeju Island trip.
Jeju Island’s Women divers (Haenyeo) were registered by UNESCO in 2016. To make a living, they dive to a depth of 10 meters without wearing oxygen mask for divers to collect seafood. They hold their breath for one minute each time and dive for up to 7 to 8 hours a day. When they finish their dive and come to the surface, they let out the breath and this breathing sounds like a whistle, which is called the “Sumbi” sound.
The image of a female diver jumping into the rough sea without hesitation, relying on a small buoy, is a vivid symbol of the spirit of Jeju Island residents. They want to collect more seafood, but since they do not have equipment to help them breathe, they need wisdom to control their desires.

Manjanggul Lava Tube – Jeju Island – South Korea
Manjanggul Lava Tube is a must-see attraction in 2023 Jeju Island trip.
Manjanggul Lave Tube on Jeju Island is the world’s largest lava tube.
Recognized as the longest, the total length is 13,422 m (8.3 miles), the width is approximately 5 m (≒16 feet), and the height is 5-10 m (16-33 feet). The temperature of the tube is always Celsius regardless of the season of the year. The humidity is maintained at 11-21 degrees Fahrenheit (52-70 degrees Fahrenheit) and 87-100%, and the interior lighting is somewhat dimmed to prevent deformation or corrosion.
As you walk through the tube, you will reach a huge stone pillar, which is a lava stalagmite about 70 meters high, and is located 1 km from the end of the public section of Manjanggul Cave. This is because there are creatures that are harmful to tourists, such as bats and ground centipedes in the sections beyond that.
